Shadows of Essence
"Now, what do I do, what do I do? This way or that? Is it okay to do this? Ohh dear oh dear," she fluttered, hand to her heart. She looked to the side and said, "Well, what do you propose?"
it was just about to answer when the woman scoffed and laughed, "Why am I asking myself this? Silly me." Offended, it snapped back, "Well excuse me. There's a big difference between you and me."
The woman eeped and looked around in panic, hand clutching her heart tightly. It cleared its throat impatiently. The woman glanced down and said, "Oh, it's you, shadow," relief in her voice.
"Right, you forgot again, didn't you?" It sighed. "Look, you know there's a difference between light and shadow?"
"Yes."
"See, there you go. You and I are different from each other."
The woman nodded in understanding but the shadow warned, "Come on now, say it."
The woman ducked her head, but admitted, "Well no, not exactly." She sniffed theatrically. She suddenly stared at her shadow, insisting, "I don't want to be dumb, really!"
The shadow sighed. "A flame and the shadow it makes are different things, as you agreed. We are like the flame- you, the corporeal, bright and passionate flame; and me, the cooler, more secretive opposite."
The woman nodded again, though the shadow did not question her this time. "Here, the corporeal has been burned away, and only the shadows are left. No one else like you seem to be around, so be careful of who sees you until we know more."
The woman giggled, "Usually, the phrase is 'Be careful of who you see, but now it's the other way around!"
The shadow stared at her witheringly until the fit had passed.
"Okay, so first we'll go to--"
"KYAAA!" "IYAaa!"
The shadow looked like it wanted to hit something. Hard, until blood was drawn. "First rule already broken. Wonderful."
